Poem About Fear of Love: When My Heart Finally Outruns My Mind

Introduction

This poem came from a very real and messy place, and that’s my head. There’s someone who keeps trying again and again, even after author have turned him down, more times than I can count. And somewhere in all that rejection, there were still these small moments where she wondered, what if I stopped running?

This poem sits right in that confusion. It’s not about being sure of anything. It’s about going back and forth of wanting to protect her and also wondering if it is the same thing as missing out. That’s the whole point of writing this poem. Instead of just saying it out loud some feelings only make sense in fragments, not full sentences.

The poem

Poem
Even our shadows keep their distance some feelings stay unfinished on purpose and the feeling does not go away in an instant

The ‘WHAT IF’ become an ‘US’.
He wishes to see me
Like sunshine after the rain,
The one who brightens
All his darkest days.

No matter how far I drift,
He finds his way back,
Gathers courage again & again
Just to reach my heart.

And I…
I wait within every one of his tries,
Calling his love a passing time.
So my heart lives in a dilemma.
A part of it tells me
“Stay as his friend,
Be his comfort,
His safe place
Not the one he loves.”

Another part of me whispers,
“What if I let myself believe?
What if, one day,
I could be his,
And he could be mine?”

But
Perhaps not today.
Perhaps not while fear speaks louder than love.
But maybe, with time.

Who Inspired This Poem?

There’s a guy who keeps trying, even though she have rejected him again and again. But there were moments where she felt like maybe we could be more than just friends, like maybe she could finally let her guard down.

Even now, she still can’t make up her mind. That’s really what this poem is about.

The fear of love is not about knowing whether to stay safe as just a friend, or take the risk of loving someone back. It’s that quiet, unspoken love and hesitation between wanting to believe in “us” and being too scared to say it out loud.

FAQ

What is this poem about?
This poem is about a guy who keeps showing up, again and again, no matter how many times she have turned him away. Every time she think he’s finally given up, he comes back. And every time, he does the same thing she brush it off.

She tell herself his love is just a phase, something that will fade on its own, if she wait long enough. But writing this poem made author realize she might be lying to herself more than to him. If you are curious why that happens, this breakdown of why we fear love explains it better than I ever could in a poem.

Why is the poem left unfinished at the end?
Author left it unfinished on purpose, because that’s genuinely where I am right now. “But maybe, with time” isn’t a poetic trick it’s the most honest line in the whole poem. I don’t have an ending yet.

I still don’t know if I’ll let myself believe this could turn into something real, or if fear is going to keep winning like it always has. Some love poems get to end with certainty. This one couldn’t, because I’m not certain either.

💬 If you were me, what would you do? Would you keep playing it safe, or take the risk and let your guard down? I genuinely love to hear what you would do in the comments.

  1. The poem is really nice. If I was in that situation then I would try to understand the person first then make any decisions. So, basically I would take my sweet time.
